Blood (Xue) in Traditional Chinese Medicine

In TCM, Blood (Xue) is a dense, material form of Qi that nourishes, moistens, and anchors the mind. While it overlaps with the biomedical concept of blood, Xue in Chinese medicine has broader functions — it is inseparable from Qi, and the two are often discussed together. The classic saying states: "Qi is the commander of Blood; Blood is the mother of Qi."

Blood is produced primarily through the Spleen's transformation of food essence, with the Heart governing its circulation and the Liver storing it when the body is at rest. The Kidneys contribute Jing (essence), which also supports Blood production. Adequate Blood ensures that tissues, organs, muscles, and tendons receive proper nourishment. It also houses the Shen (spirit), providing a stable foundation for mental clarity and emotional calm.

When Blood is deficient, symptoms may include pale complexion, dizziness, dry skin, poor memory, insomnia, and scanty menstruation. Blood stasis — where circulation becomes sluggish — can manifest as fixed sharp pain, dark complexion, and menstrual clots. Acupuncture and herbal medicine address both deficiency and stasis patterns.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Blood mean in Chinese medicine?

Blood (Xue) in TCM is a nourishing substance that moistens tissues, anchors the mind, and works closely with Qi. It is produced by the Spleen from food, circulated by the Heart, and stored by the Liver. Its concept is broader than the biomedical definition of blood.

What causes Blood deficiency in TCM?

Blood deficiency can result from poor diet, chronic illness, excessive blood loss (including heavy menstruation), emotional strain, or weak Spleen function. Symptoms typically include pallor, dizziness, dry skin, brittle nails, fatigue, and difficulty sleeping.

About Potts Point

Potts Point AcupuncturePotts Point is a small and densely populated suburb in inner-city Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Potts Point is located 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) east of the Sydney central business district and is part of the local government area of the City of Sydney.

Potts Point sits on a ridge immediately east of Woolloomooloo, west of Elizabeth Bay and Rushcutters Bay and north of Darlinghurst. The suburb has a roughly trapezoidal shape, and at its greatest extent is no more than 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) long by 200 metres (660 ft) wide. The suburb's boundaries include Macleay Street to the east, Darlinghurst Road to the southeast, William Street to the south, Brougham Street and part of Cowper Wharf Road to the west.

Potts Point is named for Joseph Hyde Potts, who was employed by the Bank of New South Wales. He purchased six-and-a-half acres of harbourside land in an area then known as Woolloomooloo Hill – which he renamed Potts Point.
